Toyota 2AR engine reliability, problems and repair
2AR-FE engine has been put into production in 2008. It has replaced the 2.4-liter 2AZ-FE. The 2AR cylinder block has straight-4 configuration, it is made of aluminum. Inside, there are thin cast-iron sleeves. The crankshaft has 8 counterweights; it is mounted with 10 mm shift to the intake side. It drives the two balancer shafts. 2AR uses lightweight pistons with floating pins.
On the top of 3 layer steel head gasket, aluminum DOHC cylinder head is installed. This head is equipped with the hydraulic lifters. It also uses a variable valve timing system (Dual-VVTi). Adjustment range: intake – 50°, exhaust – 40°. The camshafts are driven by a single-row timing chain.
The intake system uses a 2-stage variable length intake manifold ACIS. The exhaust system uses a stainless header.
2AR-FSE engine version has also been produced. It is distinguished by the different pistons (compression ratio of 13) and a modified cylinder head. This engine features direct fuel injection system D4-S, as well as new camshafts, and other ECU.
For hybrid Toyota and Lexus models, the 2AR-FXE engine was being produced. This engine works on Atkinson cycle and is equipped with a modified pistons (compression ratio of 12.5).
On the basis of 2AR, 2.7 liter 1AR-FE engine was also being produced.
Toyota 2AR engine problems and malfunctions
The construction of the given engines is quite good, 2AR have no major problems and faults.
However, there are minor problems, such as water pump leaking. Also, VVTi system knocking may occur when the engine is cold. This is the peculiarity of the system, but if it annoys you, you can try to solve this problem through VVTi repair.
So, the 2AR engine is pretty good and reliable, you just need to maintain it regularly and use only high-quality engine oil and gasoline. Also, you should change the engine oil more often. In this case, 2AR-FE longevity may exceed 180,000 miles of mileage (300,000) km.
Toyota 2AR engine tuning
You should simply forget about the high performance naturally aspirated 2AR engine. This engine is of a different type, so getting a lot of power without the boost will require a lot of money.
The easiest way is to buy a Scion tC2 turbo kit. These kits use Garrett T3 / T04E turbocharger (or other). They can be installed on 2AR stock internals, and they do not require pistons replacement.
If you buy a 2.5” performance exhaust system, you will get a little extra horsepower. The maximum boost pressure of such turbo kit is 10psi (0.7 bar), this is enough to get more than 320 horsepower. Stock pistons can withstand more than 350 hp, but for 400+ hp it is better to buy forged internals. You can also buy 2AR-FE stroker kit, which is able to increase the capacity up to 2.7 liter. However, the price of this solution is quite high, so it will be easier to sell your car and buy a more powerful one. A car with a 2GR engine will be an excellent choice.
