Nissan GA15DE engine reliability, problems and repair

This engine was produced in 1987 as substitution of old E15 engines. As all the engines made in 80-s, GA15 is maximally simple. It uses cast-iron cylinder block and aluminium head with one camshaft and 12 valves (8 intake, 4 exhaust). GA15S version was equipped with carburetor, and GA15E used multi point fuel injection system. In 1990 GA15S got 16-valves head with two camshafts. As the result, it added 10 HP. Such version was called GA15DS. In 1994 the new version appeared. It had 16 valve head, two camshafts and multi point fuel injection system. It was GA15DE engine, and it became the most popular and widespread from all.
All GA15 versions were equipped with two timing chains. The chain must be changed in about 150,000 miles of mileage (200,000-250,000 km).
GA15DE engine does not use hydraulic lifters, so every 30,000 miles of mileage (40,000-50,000 km) you should regulate the valves. Or wait for ticking noise to appear and just after that start regulating. Valve clearance (cold engine): inlet 0.25-0.33 mm, exhaust 0.32-0.4 mm.
Besides this engine, GA series included such models as GA13, GA14 and GA16.
GA15DE was discontinued in 2000, when it was replaced by QG15DE.

Nissan GA15DE engine problems and malfunctions

The most popular problems of this engine are the same as for GA16DE. You can know more about them HERE

Nissan GA15DE engine tuning

N/A build

By analogy with GA16DE, it is possible to tune GA15. Buy cold air intake, SR20 throttle body, header, 2” straight exhaust system and JWT ECU. Adjust your ECU to the new upgrades and you will gain 15-20 HP more.
If you purchase turbo kit and make GA15DET, it will not bring you any satisfaction. This engine is too small and you will just spend your money, but have no result.
