Toyota 1AR-FE engine reliability, problems and repair
Toyota 1AR-FE engine has been developed in 2008. It is a really big 4-cylinder; its displacement is 2.7 liter. It is developed on the basis of 2.5 liter 2AR-FE. The 2AR cylinder block height has been increased; it features the crankshaft with 105 mm stroke. The compression ratio is 10. The rest of the 1AR engine construction is similar to 2AR-FE.
The cylinder head is the same as in the 2AR, it is DOHC equipped with hydraulic lifters, a variable valve timing system (Dual-VVTi). It works just like the one of 2AR. The camshafts are driven by a single-row timing chain. This engine uses a variable length intake manifold ACIS.
Besides 1AR and 2AR, this series includes 6AR and 8AR.
Toyota 1AR engine problems and malfunctions
1AR-FE engine construction is the same as that of 2AR-FE, so they have the same problems. You can learn more about them HERE. To make your engine last longer, you need to change the engine oil and maintain it regularly. This may increase 1AR-FE lifespan to more than 180,000 miles of mileage (300,000 km).

1AR Turbo
These engines are not often used for the construction of high revving naturally aspirated, so you will not find many 1AR-FE performance parts. If you have decided to increase the power of your 1AR engine for sure, then buying a 2AR-FE turbo kit is a good choice. It uses a Garrett T3/T04E turbocharger and at a maximum boost pressure of 10 psi (0.7 bar), you’ll get about 320 HP. If you buy a 2.5” performance exhaust system, you will get about 10 extra HP. You may try to build a custom turbo kit using a large turbocharger and forged internals. This may help you get 500+ horsepower, but for the money that is needed for this you can simply buy a faster car.
