Toyota 2AZ-FE/FSE/FXE engine reliability, problems and repair
The 2AZ sort of engine was introduced in 2000 and replaced the Toyota 5S 2.2-liter engine. New motor was developed out of the 1AZ. The cylinder block was modified to fit the crankcase with 96 mm piston stroke. Besides, the 2AZ cylinders were enlarged to 88.5 mm in diameter. In the engine’s crankcase, there are two balancing shafts for decreasing vibrations and smooth motor work.
The engine is very much similar to the 1AZ having a VVTi on the intake camshaft, electronic throttle body, timing chain, and possessing no hydraulic lifters. It results in regularly adjusting the valves each 60,000 miles (100,000 km) of mileage. Valve clearances are of the following sizes: 0.19 – 0.29 mm for inlet valves and 0.30 – 0.40mm for outlet valves. In 2008 Toyota company introduced a successor of the 2AZ. It was a 2.5-liter 2AR.
Toyota 2AZ engine modifications and differences
1. The 2AZ-FE modification (2000 – present) is a basic motor having a compression rate of 9.6, capacity of over 160 horsepower at 5600 rpm with a torque of 220 Nm (162 lb•ft) at 4000 rpm. In 2008 the engine got to be upgraded: its camshafts were replaced with a bit more aggressive ones, its compression ratio increased to 9.8. The engine’s power was 166 HP at 6000 rpm and torque was 224 Nm (165 lb•ft) at 4000 rpm.
2. The 2AZ-FSE type (2000 – 2009) resembled the 2AZFE one with a direct injection system. Its compression ratio rose to 11, its power was 163 HP at 5800 rpm., its torque was 231 Nm (170 lb•ft) at 3800 rpm.
3. The 2AZ-FXE modification (2000 – present) is a hybrid engine for Toyotas. The motor operates by Atkinson cycle and is different for its camshafts and pistons of the other type with a 12.5-compression ratio, which is quite high. The power of the motor is 150 HP at 6000 rpm and torque is 187 Nm (138 lb•ft) at 4400 rpm.
Toyota 2AZ engine problems and malfunctions
The 2AZ’s problems are also typical of the 1AZ, because of the same construction. It may have a cylinder block thread stripped, vibration, jerking and so on, and so forth. The 2AZ engine is rather safe and its engine life comprises about 200,000 miles (300,000 km) of mileage, if thoroughly maintained.
Toyota 2AZ engine tuning
2AZ-FE Turbo. 2AZ-FTE
Various turbo kits for the 2AZ are up for grabs. By their means you can intensify the engine’s power up to 300 HP or more. The turbo kits developed out of the T04E are more common.
You need to acquire one of such kits and bolt it on the stock internals. For setting, you need a Greddy e-Manage Ultimate. Boost pressure must be not higher than 10 psi (0.7 bar). That will allow you to intensify the engine’s power up to 250 horsepower, but its stock pistons won’t serve long. So, in some period of time, you should acquire forged pistons, which fit a 8.5-9 compression ratio, and reinforced connecting rods, as well. That will help you increase boost pressure and achieve more than 300-350 horsepower.
Beside that, TRD offers a supercharger kit assembled specially for the 2AZ. You will also need to buy a Greddy e-Manage Ultimate. That will help to increase the engine power to 200 HP, which will probably save the engine lifespan.
