Toyota 5S-FE engine reliability, problems and repair
The engine Toyota 5S was produced in 1990. The 3S engine was taken as a model. Its cylinder diameter was enlarged to 87.1 mm and a brand new crankshaft with a 90.9 mm piston stroke was mounted. Two balance shafts were also installed.
The cylinder head is similar to that one mounted on the 3S. The 5S engine is not equipped with hydraulic lifters. You will need to adjust valves on your own every 20,000 miles (30,000 km) of mileage. The 5S valves clearances (cold engine): intake valves are 0.19 – 0.29 mm, exhaust valves are 0.28 – 0.38 mm., and the 5SFE firing order is 1-3-4-2. The timing belt with a 60,000 miles (100,000 km) lifespan is replaced. When the belt is broken, the valves cannot be bent.
The 5S engine is not that bad. It possesses a pretty nice engine lifespan. Though, it is extremely old and, moreover, you should not buy it today.
The engine was produced till 2001. Later it was replaced with a 2AZ-FE type. While being produced, the 5S engine was constantly modified and improved. You will be able to get to know more facts on that issue below.
Toyota 5S engine modifications and differences
1. 5S-FE Gen 1 (1990 – 1992) is the first 5S engine type. The camshafts with a duration of 220 deg, lift 7.25 mm. And a compression ratio is 9.5. Its power comprised 132 HP at 5,400 rpm. with a torque of 197 Nm (145 lb•ft) at 4,400 rpm. The engine 5SFE Gen 1 was mounted in Toyota Celica ST184 and Toyota MR2 SW21.
2. 5S-FE Gen 2 (1993 – 2001) is the second engine type, in which another camshafts with a duration of 218 deg. and lift 8 mm were applied. Its power was 137 HP at 5,400 rpm. with a torque of 197 Nm (145 lb•ft) at 4,400 rpm. The motor was installed in Toyota Camry XV10 and Celica ST204, as well.
3. 5S-FE Gen 3 (1997 – 1999) is the 3rd engine type with a capacity of 135 horsepower at 5,200 rpm and a torque of 199 Nm (147 lb•ft) at 4,400 rpm. That 5SFE Gen 3 engine was designed for Toyota Camry XV20.
4. 5S-FE Gen 4 (2000 – 2001) is the last engine version having a capacity increased to 138 horsepower at 5,200 rpm and a torque of 203 Nm (150 lb•ft) at 4,400 rpm. It was mounted in Toyota Camry XV20.
Toyota 5S engine common problems
What concerns malfunction and problems, the Toyota 5S engine completely resembles the 3S and 4S types. More information on the possible problems in details you will be able to find HERE.
Toyota 5S engine tuning
5S N/A. Turbo
It is not that easy to achieve big results concerning the issue associated with the 5S tuning. You can buy a performance exhaust system or intake manifold, etc.
You can also buy and adjust the ECU, and get a little bit more capacity. But, you had better assemble the 5SFE Turbo on your own.
5S Turbo. 5S-FTE
To make the 5S Turbo assembling easier and for leaving all the stock internals intact, a maximal boost pressure should be not higher than 6 psi (0.4 b). A complete 3S-GTE turbo kit wth a Toyota CT26 turbochager and intercooler will perfectly serve those purposes. It is reasonable to improve an exhausted system and buy the Apexi SAFC II. As a result, you will get about 200 horsepower. To intensify the capacity even more, you should buy the 3S-GTE connecting rods, install the performance camshafts with a duration of 250-260 deg. After that, it is advisable to port and polish the heads and manifolds, mount the enlarged inlet valves with a 33.5 mm. diameter, and outlet valves with a 29.5 mm diameter. The Walbro 255 model will serve as a perfect fuel pump.
It is much more cheaper to buy the 3S-GTE with a capacity of 240-260 horsepower and upgrade it. These engines show off 300 horsepower very easily.
