Nissan VH41DE engine reliability, problems and repair

In 1991 VH41DE was first installed on Nissan Cima car. The engine was developed on basis of 4.5L VH45DE. Let’s consider the main difference between VH41 and VH45. VH41DE uses the same aluminium 90° V8 cylinder block. Cylinder diameter has remained the same (93 mm), but piston stroke diminished to 76mm. Connecting rods remained the same, 147 mm length, and pistons were modified, compression ratio also increased to 10.5. VH41DE was equipped with aluminium oil pan.
Cylinder heads have DOHC design with 4 valves per cylinder and round ports. These heads are equipped with hydraulic lifters, and also variable valve timing system (VTC) on intake camshafts. The diameter of intake valves is 38 mm, while the exhaust are 33 mm.
VH41 camshafts: duration 240/240 deg, lift 9.35/9.0 mm. The engine has double row timing chain, modified intake manifold and improved exhaust manifold. VH41 for the North America market has somewhat better intake manifold, than on JDM VH41. Stock fuel injectors are 270 cc. VH41 firing order is 1-8-7-3-6-5-4-2.
This engine was produced along with its big brother VH45DE.
Since 2001 VH41DE was substituted by 4.5L VK45DE.

Nissan VH41DE engine problems and malfunctions

In contrast to VH45DE, metallic timing chain guide appeared on these engines. It increased their reliability and the typical problem of VH45 was solved.
As for the rest, it is quite reliable and durable engine. You should just serve it in time, use high quality gasoline and engine oil.

Nissan VH41DE engine tuning

N/A Build

The easiest thing you can do is buying 4-2-1 headers, 3” performance exhaust system, cold air intake and adjusting ECU aggressively. It will add some power and along with this your V8 will sound better, what gives a sense of dynamics. You can increase your engine displacement to 4.5L. For this you should buy VH45DE crank and VH45DE pistons, stock connecting rods may remain.
All these aftermarket parts will give you about 50 HP, what will increase the power to 320 horsepower.
