BMW N62B48 engine reliability, problems and repair
In 2005 the largest N62 V8 was produced to replace the engine N62B44. Along with this, the engine N62B48 (N62TU) is the successor of the M62B46 (Alpina). To update the engine the diameter of pistons in the cylinder was extended to 1 mm. Also the steel crankshaft with 88.3 mm piston stroke was installed. The width of the new connecting rods was diminished to 18 mm.
The cylinder heads N62TU were made of another material – silumin. Cylinder heads were somewhat changed: the combustion chambers were updated, and the exhaust ports were adjusted to the new exhaust manifold with bigger diameter. The specs of the N62B48 camshafts are the following: duration 282/254 deg, lift 0.3-9.85/9.7 mm. The diameter of the valves is similar to the N62B44. The new variable-length intake manifold with two-stage DISA was applied.
The engine control unit is Bosch DME ME 9.2.2.
The engine N62B48 was used on the models BMW 50i.
Since 2005 on base of the N62B48 the junior variation N62B40 was produced also. However, in 2008 it was replaced by the new turbocharged engine BMW N63B44. While the engine N62TU has become the last naturally aspirated V8 of BMW.
