BMW N62B40 engine reliability, problems and repair

The engine BMW N62B40 belongs to the series N62TU. It has replaced the N62B36 motor. It was created on the basis of the N62B48. In its cylinder block a crankshaft was installed with the piston stroke shortened to 84.1 mm, and the diameter of cylinders reduced from 93 mm to 87 mm.
Comparing to the N62B36, the cylinder heads got the updated compression chambers, new exhaust valves and a new exhaust manifold with the enlarged diameter of pipes. This time cylinder heads were made of silumin. On the N62B40 a new two-stage variable-length intake manifold DISA is used.
The engine control unit is Bosch DME ME 9.2.2.
The engine N62B40 was applied for the models BMW 40i.
Producing of the 4-liter N62TU continued till 2010. And then it was replaced by the new more compact turbocharged engine BMW N55.

The N62B40 Supercharger

Upgrade of the engine N62 B40 does not differ anyhow from tuning of the other N62 versions. The easiest way is to buy the performance exhaust system, cold air intake and to adjust ECU. It may increase the power up to 330-340 HP.
Or you can buy a supercharger kit instead and to install it on your N62TU motor. But this variant is more expensive and complicated. And if some really impressive power is wanted, purchasing BMW M5 E60 will be more effective.
