BMW N62B44 engine reliability, problems and repair
The next generation of N62B44 V8 was launched in 2001, having replaced M62B44. Comparing to the previous model, the BMW N62 engines had series of innovations, such as Valvetronic and Dual-VANOS. Besides, their ecological ratings were improved, and also the power and torque increased. For the N62B44 a new aluminum cylinder block with cast-iron crankshaft was applied. The lightened aluminum pistons and forged piston rods were also used.
The cylinder head gasket is made of laminated steel, it is 6 mm thick. The cylinder head have been developed anew. For the N62 the variable valve lift system Valvetronic is used. It changes the valve lift on the intake camshaft. Besides, the variable valve timing system on the inlet and exhaust valves Double-VANOS is updated. The camshafts are cast-iron: duration 282/254 deg, lift 0.3-9.85/9.7 mm. The inlet valves are 35 mm in diameter, the outlet are 29 mm.
In timing an unattended chain is used. The intake manifold is variable-length. The maximal length is used on low revolutions, to 3500 rpm. The engine control unit is Bosch DME ME 9.2. BMW N62 firing order – 1-5-4-8-6-3-7-2.
This power unit is used for the models BMW 45i.
On base of the N62B44 a junior 3.6-liter version N62B36 was launched.
Producing of the 4.4-liter engine was stopped in 2006, and instead they started installing the N62B48 (N62TU). Its displacement was 4.8 liters and it was powerful still more.
BMW N62B44 engine problems and issues
1. High oil consumption. As a rule, the problems of high oil consumption on N62 appear when mileage reaches about 50,000 – 60,000 miles (100,000 km), and the reason is the valve stem seals. In 40,000 – 50,000 miles (50,000 – 100,000 km) more the oil scraper rings get out of order.
2. Rough idling. The irregular work of the engine is often connected with failed ignition coils. You should check them, replace, and the engine will work normally. There may be some other possible reasons yet, such as air inflow, or failing of the air flow sensor, or some problems with Valvetronic.
3. Oil leaking. Mainly crankshaft oil seal or alternator bracket gasket may leak. Replace them and leaking will stop.
In addition, on the N62 catalytic converters destroy with time and their cells get to the cylinders. It causes scoring in the cylinder blocks. Therefore it would be better to remove the catalytic converters and to install cat-backs instead.
To reduce the number of possible problems with the BMW N62, use the engine oil recommended by the manufacturer. Serve the engine regularly and its in-service life will be maximally long.

You can see the number of the engines N62 or N62TU on the left side of the engine under the exhaust manifold.
BMW N62 B44 engine tuning
The N62B44 Supercharger
Supercharger kit is quite a simple, but rather effective way to increase the power of the BMW N62 B44. Everything we need is purchasing a supercharger kit (ESS TVS2/TVS1, for example) and installing it on stock internals N62. It might be as well to buy the performance exhaust system along with it. At the maximal pressure 7 psi, your N62B44 will produce about 430-450 HP.
The shortcoming of this method is its cost. So, perhaps it would be easier to buy used BMW M5 E60 or M6 E63 with the perfect sporty engine S85 V10.
