BMW M62B46 engine reliability, problems and repair

In 1999 BMW X5 E53 appeared, and it quickly won the reputation of a dynamic sport utility vehicle. The power of the standard BMW 4.4 engine M62B44 seemed not being enough for it. To make the car still more high-speed, Alpina company developed the new engine M62B46. It was constructed on the basis of the engine block M62B44. The diameter of its cylinders was expanded in 1 mm. Also the new crankshaft was installed there. Its piston stroke was enlarged to 85 mm, and Mahle pistons and modified rods were used. Besides, the cylinder head gaskets, inlet and outlet camshafts, the covers and the engine pan were replaced.
The specs of the stock camshafts of the M62B46 are the following: duration 249/249 deg, lift 10.5/10.5 mm. The diameter of the valves has remained the same: the inlet are 35mm, and the outlet are 30,5 mm. The engine control unit is Bosch DME M7.2.
This engine was used for the models BMW X5 E53, Alpina B10 V8/V8S E39, Alpina Roadster V8 E52 and Morgan Aero 8.

Later, just in two years since it was launched, the engine M62B46 was replaced with the new BMW N62B48.
