Nissan MR20DE engine reliability, problems and repair
Nissan MR20DE is a successor of QR20DE. This engine was designed both by Nissan and Renault. In Renault model range it is named M4R. New aluminium cylinder block with offset crankshaft was developed for the engine, Piston stroke is 90.1 mm, and cylinder diameter in this engine is 84 mm. Aluminium cylinder head has two camshafts and continuous variable valve timing system CVTC on the intake side. MR20DE was not equipped with any hydraulic lifters, and so if ticking noise has appeared, you need to regulate valve clearance.
The intake and exhaust systems are made in special way to create the lowest resistance. Intake manifold has long runners, it improves low- and mid-range torque. Exhaust system has straight design, what lets carrying exhaust fumes effectively.
Also MR20DE has EGR system, which returns a part of the exhaust gas for its repeated combustion and improves the ecological index.
The engineers also tried to reduce friction thanks to brilliant mirror-like polishing of crankshaft and camshaft journals, and also thanks to utterly true shape of the cylinders.
All that made MR20DE engine quite convenient for secure driving in the city. But if you enjoy active driving, for you it certainly will not be enough.
Since 2010 MR20DD with direct injection system has appeared.
Also Nissan MR series include such engines as MR16DDT, MR18DE/MRA8DE, M9R.
Nissan MR20DE engine problems and malfunctions
1. High oil consumption. More likely soot deposited in cylinder or oil rings failed. You need to run diagnostics, it may need overhaul.
2. Rough idle. It mainly happens because of timing chain stretching. Along with rough idle the car is losing its power. Just change the timing chain and all will be settled.
Also dirty throttle body may cause this problem. You should check its state, perhaps it must be changed.
3. Whistle noise. It happens quite often, when the engine is cold. You should not be afraid of it, alternator belt is the reason. Just change the belt for the new and your engine will not make the noise any more.
There are also some other problems, which may happen sometimes. The one of the most unpleasant is head cracks. Usually it happens if the spark plugs are screwed very tight, the cracks at the screw appear. Later coolant may start leaking through them, what causes misfire on your MR20DE. It may be solved by changing head for the new. To avoid the problem, it is necessary to screw the spark plugs carefully and only on cold engine.
To sum up, MR20DE/M4R is a quite reliable, but ordinary engine of mid 2000s. Its life expectancy may exceed 180,000 miles of mileage (300,000 km), if it is served regularly and uses quality motor oil.
Nissan MR20DE engine tuning
If making MR20DE tuning has occurred to you, better forget this idea. This engine seems the worst choice for tuning, you will fail to buy any performance parts for it. However, if you are a stubborn person and wish to increase the power of your MR20DE by any means, then buy cold air intake, custom-build header and straight exhaust system. Adjust ECU upon that, and you will get about 10-15 HP.
This engine is not suitable for performance tuning.
