BMW M54B22 engine reliability, problems and repair

The youngest engine from M54 series which also includes M54B25, M54B30 and S54B32 represents the evolution of M52TUB20 motor. The main feature of new engine is the fact that its crankshafts was replaced with a new one made of cast iron. The stroke has also been increased from 66 mm to 72 mm. Light pistons have also been installed along with modified forged connecting rods145 mm long. On the other hand the block of cylinders is still the same made of aluminum and cast iron sleeves which were taken from previous M52TU engine.
Cylinder head are equal to those that can be found in M52TU with Double VANOS. Intake manifold was changed a bit. It has become shorter with larger ports.
Control system has also been replaced with Siemens MS43/Siemens MS45/Siemens MS45.1. The M54 engine uses an electronic throttle control.
This engine was mainly used for BMW models with 20i index.
M54B22 was used by bavarian automaker till 2006. Later its production was stopped after introduction of new N43B20 4–cylinder motor.

BMW M54B22 engine tuning

M54B22 Chip. Stroker 2.6 L

There is no sense in handling with chip-tuning of stock version of engine. That is why we offer another way. If you are eager to make your motor as powerful as possible, you can increase the displacement with the help of stroker kit. All you need is to purchase connecting rods and crankshaft from M54B30 and add them to stock pistons. You will also need thick cylinder head gasket. Don’t forget to tune your engine on M54B25 ECU. Such actions will provide you with additional 20 HP. It will affect the acceleration in a great way.

M54B22 ESS Supercharger

There is another easy but at the same time expensive method to add HP to your M54B22 engine. All you need is to purchase ESS TS2 supercharger kit. You can use stock connecting rods and pistons. Your engine will perform more than 250 HP.
