BMW N13 engine reliability, problems and repair

New gen BMW 4-cylinder engines called N13 (Prince) were developed in collaboration with French PSA Group. BMW N13 motor was produced in 2011 and replaced all previous naturally aspirated 4-cylinder engines such as N43B16, N43B20, N45B16, N45B20S, N46B18 and N46B20.
N13 cylinder block was made of aluminum combined with dry iron-cast sleeves. It also had forged crankshaft with 8 counterweights, connecting rods 138.5 mm long and Mahle pistons 77 mm in diameter.
It was equipped by new cylinder head and variable valve lift system Valvetronic III as well as BMW N55 and N20. At the same time Double-VANOS variable valve timing on the two camshafts was used in addition to direct fuel injection.
Twin-scroll Garrett MGT1549ZDL turbocharger in BMW N13 operated under 10 psi (0.7 bar) boost.
Engine was equipped by Bosch MEVD17.2.4 control unit.
This engine was used in BMW 14i, 16i, 18i and 20i models.

BMW N13 engine modifications and differences

1. N13B16M0 (2011 – present) is a basic version with heat exchanger and 2.5″ exhaust system. It produced 170 HP at 4 800 rpm and 250 Nm at 1,500-4,500 rpm. It is used in BMW 18i and 20i models.
2. N13B16U0 (2011 –present) is variation without heat exchanger and 2″ exhaust system. Power is reduced with the help of ECU firmware. Engine produces 136 HP at 4 350 rpm and 22 Nm at 1,350-4,300 rpm. It was used in BMW 16i models.
3. N13B16K0 (2012 –present) is another modification with 102 HP at 4,000 rpm and 180 Nm at 1,100-3,900 rpm. This model was used in BMW 14i models.

BMW N13 engine problems and drawbacks

1. Vibration. You need to check fuel injectors and clean them in case of necessity.
2. Rough idling. This problem is caused by idling valve and throttle flap. You only need to clean them in order to avoid such problem.
3. High fuel consumption. You need to check air flow meter as it can be the main cause of the problem.
At the same time N13 doesn’t like often change of motor liquids. At the same time you need to change them regularly. High quality gasoline is recommended as well as motor oil prescribed by BMW brand. If you proceed with regular checks and maintenance you will hardly face any problems.

N13 Chip tuning

The easiest and most reliable way to add some power to your BMW N13 is to complete chip tuning. You need to buy BMS JB Plus and install it on stock engine. It is a perfect and cheap variant to increase HP level by 30-35 HP. If you need more reliability and plan to use maximum potential from your motor you may install heat exchanger form BMW 118i.
