BMW N45B16 engine reliability, problems and repair

New 4-cylinder inline N45B16 engine was produced in 2004 on base of N42B18. This motor had new crankshaft with lower stroke, new pistons and modified connecting rods. At the same time Valvetronic system was removed from this version of engine.
N45 cylinder head differs from N42 with absence of valve lift system Valvetronic and new cap. At the same time other generator and spark plugs are used.
Engine is equipped by Bosch ME 9.2 control unit. But in 2007 it was replaced by Bosch ME17.4.5. Such engines are called N45NB16.
They were used in BMW 16i models.
N45B20S 2-liter sports version was produced along with N45B16.
At the same time N43B16 and N46B18 engines were constructed for basic BMW modifications available in cheap segment.
In 2011 this engine was replaced by turbocharged 1.6-liter N13B16 motor.

BMW N45B16 disadvantages and problems

1. Engine knocking. This problem is mainly connected with timing chain tensioner which should be checked. At the same time timing chains are not as reliable as you can expect. They also need replacement every 60,000 miles (100,000 km) of mileage due to the fact that they stretch. It can result in timing chain jumping.
2. Vibration. In the majority of cases this problem is connected with Vanos system. If you want to get rid of this problem you must have your Vanos cleaned.
At the same time BMW N45 engine is prone to pinking. That is why you are supposed to use gasoline and motor oil of high quality only. You should take it rather seriously and buy only recommended by BMW brand oil.

N45B16 was developed only for easy and comfortable city driving. That is why you will hardly find any high-performance racing parts for it. That is why the only thing left is to buy performance exhaust system and cold air intake. It will add extra 10 HP in combination with engine management tuning. If you still want to gain more power from your engine, you need to sell your BMW 116i/316i and buy better BMW model.
