Toyota 4GR-FSE engine reliability, problems and repair
In 2003, Toyota GR series has been complemented by a new 2.5 liter 4GR engine. It has replaced the famous 1JZ-GE engine. This engine is the 3GR-FSE with a smaller capacity. The aluminum 60° V6 3GR engine block was complemented by forged crankshaft with a 77 mm stroke. The cylinders diameter has been reduced to 83 mm; the new pistons have been installed. As a result, V6 displacement has decreased from 3 to 2.5 liters.
4GR-FSE cylinder heads are the same as in the 3GR-FSE. They are DOHC heads equipped with variable valve timing system (Dual-VVTi) on intake and exhaust camshafts. This system works just like in 3GR. 4GR uses the same camshafts as 3GR. The intake system uses variable length intake manifold ACIS. This engine features direct fuel injection system, it may be recognized by FSE designation. The firing order for the 4GR-FSE engines is 1-2-3-4-5-6.
This engine was designed for Lexus vehicles with an index of 250, as well as for some Toyota models.
Together with 4GR, Toyota GR series included the following engines: 1GR, 2GR, 3GR, 5GR, and 6GR.
Toyota 4GR engine problems and malfunctions
Reliability of the 4GR is similar to other engines of GR series, such as 3GR, and 2GR. HERE you may read about its basic and common problems.

4GR Supercharger
This 2.5 liter 4GR engine has been designed for a leisurely drive; it is not intended to be a base for something powerful and fast.
Buy 1JZ-GTE, it is extraordinary good for fast driving. You can buy a cold air intake and aftermarket exhaust system;this will give some extra horsepower.
Do not buy aggressive cams, aftermarket intake manifold, and other performance parts for the high rev naturally aspirated 4GR construction, it is not reasonable.
The only reasonable way to increase the 4GR-FSE power is to buy a supercharger kit. These kits are manufactured by the ARMA Company. You may install it on the stock internals. Maximum boost pressure is 7 psi (0.5 bar). As a result, you will get about 310 HP and a torque of 380 N.m. Construction of something more powerful or 4GR-FSE turbo does not make sense, it is unreasonably expensive. You are better to buy a simply more powerful car.
