Nissan QG16DE engine reliability, problems and repair

Nissan QG16DE was designed by Aichi Machine Industry to substitute GA16DE. This engine is quite simple. It has cast-iron cylinder block, and crankshaft with 88 mm piston stroke inside, the same as on other QG engines. Cylinder diameter is 76 mm. Also it uses modified pistons with compression ratio 9.5, what lets obtaining 1.6L displacement.
This engine is equipped with cylinder head with two camshafts (DOHC) and 16 valves. This head has variable valve timing system on its intake side (N-VCT). The head is not equipped with hydraulic lifters, so from time to time you should regulate valve clearance, once you hear metallic rattle. QG16DE engine also uses EGR system for repeated burning of the exhaust gas. It lets somewhat decrease the emission release. Moreover, it uses electronic throttle body and intake manifold with vortex valves.
Besides QG16, QG series consist of such motors as QG18DE (DD), QG15DE and QG13DE.
In 2006 QG16 was substituted with naturally aspirated HR16DE engine.

Nissan QG16 engine problems and malfunctions

This engine does not have any serious problems or faults, but still some troubles exist and we are going to tell you about them here.
1. Timing chain stretching on QG16DE. If your engine starts badly, loses its power, works roughly at idle and makes an excessive noise, then more likely your timing chain has stretched. Check its condition, and, if necessary, purchase the new one, it is not expensive. Service life of QG16DE timing chain is about 100,000 miles of mileage (150,000 km).
2. QG16DE does not start. Often it happens because of throttle body or fuel pump screen. In this case you should clean throttle body, change pump screen (or buy the new), and the problem must be solved this way.
3. Low whistling. Check alternator belt, usually it may whistling. Perhaps it is necessary to buy the new belt along with pulley.
4. Jerking on low RPM. This is a peculiarity of the engine. If it is unpleasant for you, you can turn to the dealer for the new soft for ECU.
Besides, catalysts’ lifespan on these engines is not that long. And also throttle body gets dirty quite often and so it is necessary to clean it periodically, otherwise the engine will get slow.

Location of QG16DE engine number

The number is placed on the right side of cylinder block. This place is quite exposed and rusts often. To keep the number, we recommend you washing it with heat-resistant lacquer.

Chip tuning

If your QG16DE is not powerful enough, while you wish to enjoy speed and wild roaring of the motor, then sell your car and purchase something faster. Constructing powerful QG16 would cost you too much, and besides, such QG16DE turbo would not be reliable.
You can buy QG18DE turbo kit and install it on your QG16, also set the maximal pressure boost 7 psi (0.5 bar), but your transmission may not bear the extra torque. To avoid any big expenses, you can buy 4-2-1 header, aftermarket exhaust system, cold air intake and adjust your ECU. It will add about 10-15 HP and your engine will sound sportier.
