BMW M44 engine reliability, problems and repair

Main difference between M44B19 and M42B18

BMW M44 was produced in 1996 and replaced M42 which was also used as the main base for construction of new motor. Displacement was increased up to 1.9 liters while diameter of cylinder was 85 mm. New pistons have been installed along with new crankshaft with 83.5 mm stroke. Lighter and longer connecting rods were used in new engine. Their length was 140 mm.
M44 cylinder head was also modified. Construction of valves was changed. Hydraulic lifters were still used in M44. Diameter of intake valves is the same. It is 33 mm while exhaust valves are 30.5 mm in diameter.
Water pump was upgraded. It eventually stopped leaking. Intake system was totally renewed. It had variable length intake manifold DISA installed along with Bosch DME M5.2 engine control unit.
This engine was used in BMW 18is models which were mainly produced for the US market.
N42B20 was produced in 2001 as replacement of M44. It was 4-cylinder M series engine followed by N45B20S motor.

BMW M44B19 disadvantages and problems

Possible M44 malfunctions (overheating, noise, rough idle, etc.) are absolutely equal to problems that can be found in M42 previous version. You can find out more about them in THIS section. Timing mode and oil scraper rings proved to have no problems and high level of reliability.
