BMW M43B16 engine reliability, problems and repair

M43B16 is another 1.6-liter engine which belongs to BMW M43 family along with M43B18 and M43TU. It replaced M40B16 motor. It was developed on base of M43B18 engine. The main difference between M43B16 and M43B16 includes lighter crankshaft with lower piston stroke which is 72 mm, new pistons and connecting rods which are 145 mm long (length of M43B18 connecting rods was 140 mm).
Cylinder head has several modifications and changes in comparison with M40B16. However SOHC construction is still the same. Timing belt was replaced by more reliable timing chain. Replacement of the chain is recommended every 180 000 miles (300 000 km) of mileage. At the same time this motor is equipped with lighter valves and new springs. It has rockers of another construction and also has hydraulic lifters. Inlet valve is 42 mm in diameter while diameter of outlet valves is 36 mm. Camshaft specs are as follows: duration 244/244 deg, lift 10.6/10 mm.
Ignition system has been changed. Variable-length intake manifold DISA is used on the inlet in order to optimize engine characteristics.
This motor was mainly used for BMW 16i models.
Production of new BMW 16i – N42B18 engine was launched in 2001. New motor replaced M43B16 within a year.

M43B16 Turbo

If you want to proceed with M43B16 turbocharging, you need repeat the same actions as for M40B18 engine. You can read detailed description HERE. The only exception is forged pistons that can be purchased for M43 motor.
