BMW S63 engine reliability, problems and repair

After production of M5 E60 with S85B50 engine, at M GmbH decided to use more compact V8 with two turbochargers. The cylinder block, the crankshaft and rods got from usual N63. Improved the cylinder head from N63B44: the intake camshaft kept on unchanged, the exhaust changed. Specs of M5 F10 camshafts: duration 231/252 deg, lift 8.8/9 mm. Valves, springs were from N63. Diameters of valves: inlet 33.2 mm, exhaust 29 mm. Camshafts are set in motion by the timing chain, the same as on N63B44.
The intake system is slightly changed, exhaust manifold is new. Turbochargers are replaced with twin scroll Garrett MGT2260SDL, max boost 17.5 psi (1.2 bar). BMW S63 firing order: 1-5-4-8-6-3-7-2. The control unit of the engine – Siemens MSD85.1. This motor showed 555 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and named S63B44O0. There are such motors on BMW X6M and X5M.
In 2011, for the new generation F10 M5, engine upgrade to S63B44T0 (S63TU). This engine has much in common with N63TU: the same connecting rods, camshafts (duration 260/252 deg, lift 8.8/9.0 mm), as well as the timing chain. In addition, new Mahle pistons (Compression ratio = 10), the new crankshaft. Direct injection system was on S63B44T0 also used variable valve lift system Valvetronic III on intake camshafts. Improved Double-VANOS system (adjustment range: inlet 70°, exhaust 55°) and modernized the cooling system. Also on S63TU used Garrett MGT2260DSL, max boost 22 psi (1.5 bar). The control unit of the F10 M5 engine – Bosch MEVD17.2.8.
All this allowed to increase power to 560 HP at 6,000-7,000 rpm, and the torque 680 Nm at 1,500-5,750 rpm.
The S63B44T0 used on BMW M5 F10 and M6 F13.
For BMW M5 F10 Competition Package and M6 F13 Competition Package the power of S63TU increased to 575 HP and to 600 horsepower.

BMW S63B44 engine problems and malfunctions

Malfunctions of BMW S63 are similar as on N63. Learn a little more about them HERE.

S63 turbo upgrade

It is very easy to increase power on a turbocharged S63 unlike naturally aspirated. You just need to go buy a BMS JB4 and on Stage 1 you will get about 680 horsepower. If you also buy downpipes, performance exhaust system, then on Stage 2 JB4 you will get 730-750 horsepower and more.
