Toyota 4ZZ-FE engine reliability, problems and repair
The youngest engine among the ZZ s is a 1.4-liter 4ZZ-FE designed in 2000. They simply took a 3ZZ cylinder inserted a crankshaft with a 71.3 mm piston stroke. The 4ZZ motor doesn’t differ significantly from the 1ZZ and 3ZZ models. One can scarcely find its modifications as the only one was made.
Apart from the 4ZZ-FE, they developed other ZZ engine modifications. Among them were the 1ZZ-FE, 2ZZ-GE and 3ZZ-FE.
The 4ZZ production came to a halt in 2007. The next year a new 1NR engine came out into a world market. The engine is a successor of the 4ZZ.

The 4ZZ disadvantages and failures are typical of the 1ZZ. You can find them HERE.
Toyota 4ZZ engine tuning
4ZZ-FE Supercharger
The 4ZZ engine is not the best choice for performance tuning. Due to small displacement, it would be difficult for you to achieve powerful capacity. Nevertheless, you can purchase a Toyota SC-14 supercharger together with an intercooler, 2ZZ injectors, blow-off, and bolt on a performance exhaust system. Having set the ECU Greddy E-manage Ultimate, you will get about 135-140 horsepower. Stock pistons will endure not more than 7 psi (0.5 bar). You need to buy forged pistons and other connecting rods, to get more power. Nevertheless, it is not possible to reach high performance rates having a 1.4-liter engine.
