The engine 1UZ is the founder of Toyota UZ (included 2UZ and 3UZ). It appeared in 1989 and intended for the largest models of Toyota and Lexus. This 4-liter engine replaced the old Toyota 5V. Both of them gained reputation the one of the most reliable Toyota engines with huge motor potential.
The cylinder block 1UZ-FE aluminum 90° V8, with pressed thin cast-iron sleeves. Rods length in 1UZFE is 146 mm. Two aluminum heads, twin cam engine with 4 valves on the cylinder. Hydraulic lifters are absent so 1UZ needs periodic adjustment of valves. The firing order for the Toyota 1UZ engines is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2. On the stock engine 1UZFE injector size are 220 cc/min.
Since 1995 the engine was a little updated. The differences are following: the lightweight rods (their weight 581 g, against 628 g, in first version) and high compression pistons (CR=10.4). Power increased to 260 HP. Stock size of fuel injectors 1UZ-FE: 251 cc/min. Since 1997 1UZ-FE got VVTi system (intake cams), inlet ports changed, diameters of inlet and exhaust valves increased, cylinder head gasket changed, the long 2-stage intake manifold (ACIS) applied, the ignition system modernized. Also in 1UZ-FE VVTi are used new pistons increased to 10.5 compression ratio, and electronic throttle body.
All 1UZFE engine generation use a timing belt. Its lifespan is 50,000-60,000 miles of mileage (100,000 km). In all updates without variable valve timing system (VVTi), at break of timing belt, valves won’t be bent.
Production of this engine lasted till 2002 then it was replaced on 4.3-liter 3UZ-FE.
Toyota 1UZ engine problems and malfunctions
Its difficult to find faults in 1UZ. This motor has no any design errors, disadvantages or troubles. All problems in 1UZ are connected with age of vehicle, a manner of operation or low-quality maintenance. Using low-quality spark plugs can quickly fail. Their replacement isn’t so simple as it seems. Don’t waste time and money to make NA tuning with ITB or stroker. It will be better to buy supercharger kit for 1UZ based on the Eaton M90 (or something similar). Such options have included everything you need. But may by you have to buy in addition a fuel pressure regulator. Using all described above instead of the supercharger, you can install a turbocharger. For these purposes, you can buy single turbo kit (Garrett GT40). Or you can buy turbocharger, turbo manifold, intercooler separately. You will also need a multi-layer steel head gaskets, wastegate, blow off, boost controller, oil feed line, oil return line, thermal insulation, fuel injectors 7M-GTE (440 cc/min), pipes, clamps, VEMS ECU. After assembly 1UZ will show more than 450 horsepower.
1UZ Twin turbo
Similar performance upgrade you can make on the basis of two Garrett VNT25. Such sets are easy to buy and install on forged pistons. It can provide more than 500 horsepower. In any of these cases you can use more powerful turbochargers, to do head porting, to increase the boost pressure to the limit and get 1000 horsepower.
