Toyota 3ZZ-FE engine reliability, problems and repair
In 2000 a 3ZZ-FE engine being the next generation after Toyota 4A. was introduced. The 3ZZ motor was a younger model of the 1ZZ and 2ZZ types. It was developed out of the 1ZZ-FE model having a crankshaft with a 81.5 mm decreased piston stroke installed inside the cylinder block. Pistons and connecting rods were modified with compression ratio increased to 10.5. Another inlet manifold and smaller throttle body was mounted. The smallest ZZ – 4ZZ model would be created in a similar way later on. Though, mostly, the 3ZZ didn’t differ much from the 1ZZ.
In comparison with the 4A, any modifications were not designed out of the 3ZZ. There is only one unique model.
The 3ZZ was manufactured during 7 years and later it was replaced with the 1ZR.
Toyota 3ZZ engine problems and malfunctions
When it concerns failures and malfunctions, the 3ZZ motor is very much the same as its 1ZZ-FE elder brother. Soon, in some period of time, it will consume more oil, develop vibrations, knocking noise, etc. You will find more detailed information on that HERE.
Mostly, the 3ZZ engine possesses a low rate of engine lifespan (~120,000 miles/200,000 km) and is not the best motor as for the most owners.
Toyota 3ZZ engine tuning
3ZZ-FE Turbo. 3ZZ-FTE
You can design a 3ZZ-FTE in the same way as you did it with the 1ZZ. Although, to make an 3ZZ , you need a Garrett GT25 turbo kit.
3ZZ-FE Supercharger
It is not that easy to increase the capacity of the 3ZZ as there are no aftermarket parts for that model. Purchasing a Toyota SC-14 superchager is the least reasonable way of tuning the 3ZZ. There is no need for buying an intercooler, blow-off, 2ZZ-GE injectors, and ECU Greddy E-manage Ultimate. All those performance modes are bolt on the stock pistons. Boost pressure mustn’t exceed 7 psi (0.5 bar). Finally, you can get about 150 horsepower.
Taking into account all the improvements, it would be more simply to buy a 1ZZ-FE and make a swap.
