BMW M62B35 engine reliability, problems and repair

The recent version of the engines BMW M62 V8 was produced in 1996 to replace the M60B30. The engine M62B35 was made on the base of the M62B44. Short stroke crank was installed into its cylinder block, and the diameter of the cylinders was diminished to 84 mm. The sleeves remained nikasil, and since 1998 nikasil has been replaced with alusil. The updated engine M62B35 has some difference from its predecessor. The new pistons were applied, while the metal-ceramic piston rods remained the same.

The heads of cylinder blocks were somewhat updated. The camshafts changed: duration 236/228 deg, lift 9/9 mm. Also valve-spring retainer and springs were relieved. The valves have remained the same as on the M60: the diameter of the inlet valves – 32 mm, of the exhaust – 28.5 mm. The valve covers are made of magnesium. Timing chain is single-strand. Its average service life is 90,000 – 120,000 miles (150,000 – 200,000 km) of mileage. The new throttle body were also used, and the intake manifold was upgraded. The ignition coils are similar to the ones of the BMW M52. The programmed thermostat was applied also. The engine control unit is Bosch DME M5.2. BMW M62 B35 fuel injector size – 191 cc.
In 1998 the engine was somewhat upgraded and got the name M62TUB35. Its main innovations are the following: the variable valve timing system VANOS on the inlet camshaft, the new intake manifold with narrow ports, an electronic throttle body, and also the engine control unit Bosch DME M7.2.
The engines M62B35 and M62TUB35 were used for the models BMW 35i.
In 2001 the engine M62B35 was substituted by N62B36, and within two years it completely replaced 3.5-liter M62.

Tuning M62B35 does not differ from the upgrade M62B44 anyhow. You can read about this in detail HERE. As a result of intervention into M62B35, its capacity is certainly less, than the one of the 4.4-liter M62B44 with the similar mods.
