BMW M43TU engine reliability, problems and repair

M43TU was firstly introduced in 1998. It turned out to be modified version of M43B18. New engine has improved cylinder block for balancing shafts. At the same time cylinders dimensions were increased up to 85 mm. New crankshaft was installed with 83.5 mm stroke. Pistons and connecting rods were also modified.
None changes have been made in cylinder head with the exception of lower power and new camshaft. DISA intake manifold was made of plastic.
Engine was equipped by Bosch BMS 46 control system.
This engine was mainly used in BMW 16i and 18i models.
Along with this motor production of 16V M44B19 was launched.
In 2001 M43TU motor was replaced by new 2-liter N42B20 engine.

BMW M43TU engine modifications and differences

1. M43TU B19 OL (1998 – 2002) is a base modification with 118 HP at 5,500 rpm, 180 Nm of torque at 3,900 rpm
2. M43TU B19 UL (1998 – 2001) is a new version with lower power, another camshaft. It produces 105 HP at 5,300 rpm, 165 Nm of torque at 2,500 rpm.
