Subaru EZ36 engine reliability, problems and repair

In 2007 SUV Subaru Tribeca received the biggest Flat-6 Subaru engine which was called EZ36D. It replaced EZ30 and was used only for the largest models. The main differences between EZ36D and EZ30 are as follows: EZ36D uses the strengthened cylinder block, inside of which there are cast-iron sleeves 1.5 mm thick. Diameter of cylinders was increased to 92 mm, the crankshaft with a piston stroke of 91 mm was installed in the block. Cylinder block deck height didn’t change and it is 202 mm. EZ36 applies the new unusual asymmetric connecting rods, their length is 125 mm, and the compression ratio was lowered to 10.5. All these modifications allowed to receive 3.6 liter capacity.
This cylinder block was covered with new DOHC heads, using variable valve timing Dual AVCS on intake and exhaust camshafts. Adjusting range of intake camshafts is 51 °, exhaust ones is 21 °.
3 timing chains are used in EZ36, and also cylinder block heads were improved by modification of combustion chambers. EZ36 has no variable valve lift system AVLS. The engine cooling system and headers were modified for this motor.
All these modifications allowed to receive 260 HP at 6,000 rpm, and torque 335 Nm at 4,000 rpm.

Subaru EZ36 engine problems and malfunctions

This engine has the same problems as EZ30, HERE you can learn more about them.
But we should mention that this 3.6 liter motor is more reliable than EZ30.

EZ36 Turbo

Your 3.6-liter motor is similar to EZ30, so, you won’t find big differences.
You shouldn’t waste time and try to increase power without use of a turbocharger, it doesn’t make sense.
The only right option is a turbocharging or you have to install supercharger kit. To build EZ36 turbo, you should learn our recommendations about the choice of performance parts HERE.
If you choose installation of supercharger kit, then you can reach 400+ horsepower on stock internals. Both these options are expensive, therefore it might be cheaper to buy a faster car.
